Growth and Habitat
- Hardy, cool-season, densely-tufted native perennial bunchgrass. Has deep, fibrous, extensive roots. One of the most drought-tolerant of native range grasses. (FEIS)
- Low seed germinability and variability in length of dormancy and viability. Some ecotypes require cool-moist stratification prior to germination. (FEIS).
- Grows on dry foothills, rocky valley or upper slopes, plains, ridges. Moderately tolerant of both alkali and salt, adapted to soils of low fertility. Well adapted to loose sandy soils. Dominates sandy soils throughout sagebrush-grass zone. Soil textures range from coarse sand to heavy clay, shallow shale. (FEIS)
- Grows in arid and semiarid climates, mostly in areas with mesic temperature regimes and arid moisture regimes. (FEIS).
- Drought tolerant, fibrous root system (NRCS). Makes it desirable for erosion control and reclamation
Management
- Important forage for wildlife and domestic livestock in the winter, particularly in salt desert communities (FEIS)
- Well-suited for surface erosion control and desert revegetation, though not highly effective in controlling sand movement.
- Can reestablish on burned sites through seed dispersed from adjacent unburned areas (FEIS).

- One of the most important native forage grasses on western desert and semi-desert rangelands. Used by domestic cattle, sheep and horses and is highly palatable during most of the year with the exception of late spring when seed heads are forming (NRCS). Provides valuable forage for cattle in the winter especially in salt desert communities and it supplies a source of green feed for domestic livestock early in the spring before most other native grasses have started new growth (NRCS)
- Highly palatable to wildlife. Preferred forage for elk in all seasons and for deer and antelope in spring, late fall, winter. Seed eaten by birds and rodents. (NRCS)
- It does not tolerate poorly drained soils, extended periods of inundation, winter flooding, or shading. It is tolerant of weakly saline and sodic soil conditions but prefers neutral soil conditions. Response to fire is variable with reports of slight to moderate damage to generally killed by fire. Indian ricegrass regenerates by seed after fire (NRCS)
- Grasshoppers, jack rabbits, rodents may damage stands. No known serious disease problems in Indian ricegrass (NRCS).
- Reproduces only by seed (NRCS).
